When Maredin was founded, its primary goal was to provide long-term outperformance to "accredited" (high net worth) investors. Over the past few years, after numerous discussions with friends, friends of friends, and clients, regarding their financial situations and goals, we realized that people are simply not getting the financial advice they need from some other firms. They are being told what they want to hear, not what is best for them. They are getting boilerplate answers and recommendations, not tailored solutions. And worst of all, they are not getting the performance results they deserve.
In response to this, we decided that in addition to focusing on investing in undervalued companies and attaining long-term capital appreciation for "accredited" investors, we wanted to help anyone who would like to have but didn't know where to find superior financial guidance; hence, we decided to create Separately Managed Accounts and the Goodwin Portfolio, and offer them to all investors.
At our core, we focus on value investing, superior results, great service, and prospering together. People look to Maredin because we are an independent, boutique, Registered Investment Advisor that has the trust of its clients because we put them first (a fiduciary's responsibility). Being independent means that we do not have the same conflicts of interest that many large financial firms have. As a fee only advisor, we only charge a fee for our service, we receive no commissions or referral fees from anyone, and there are absolutely no hidden charges.
Maredin will ensure that your funds are working towards attaining your goals. Whether having you participate in one of the funds we currently manage, or tailoring an investment portfolio just for you, we know you will love working with us for the long-term.
"We Eat Our Own Cooking"
"We eat our own cooking" is an expression used in the financial services industry when the money managers are personally invested in the same positions as their clients are. Our founder Marcelo Zinn has invested virtually every penny of his family’s savings in the funds he manages. Substantially all of his extended family’s assets are also invested in the funds. As a result, potential and current clients should feel very confident that Maredin’s interests are completely aligned with their own (talk about risk management!).
We are also an independent, boutique firm. We have no ties to Wall Street or any other companies for that matter. Our allegiance is solely to our clients (which include our family and friends). With the way our business model is set up, Maredin only does better financially if our clients do better financially. Being independent provides us the freedom to attain and even exceed our clients long-term goals without the usual conflicts of interest so common with today’s financial institutions.
We’re a Fee Only Firm
As a fee only firm, we get paid a percentage of the Assets Under Management ("AUM") for managing our three funds and Separately Managed Accounts. We do not receive any compensation in the form of commissions, rebates, awards, finder’s fees, or hidden charges from any outside entities. Furthermore, our compensation in dollar terms goes up or down depending on the performance of your account (we only earn more money if you do!). This further illustrates that Maredin's interests are totally aligned with its clients.
Our Clients Come First
Our firm is a "fiduciary" and an independent Registered Investment Adviser. Both federal and state law require that as a fiduciary, we must act solely in the best interest of our clients – even if that interest is in conflict with our own financial interests. Remarkably, not all financial institutions choose to abide by this standard.
The Long Term Matters
Maredin focuses on investing over the long-term. Not only are total returns generally better when investing over the long-term (not to mention lower brokerage fees), but you also get much better tax treatment from the US Government (long-term capital gains are taxed at 20%, whereas an investor's short-term gains are taxed at regular income tax rates).
Maredin has the luxury of being able to invest in any product that we feel provides considerable value. This provides a great deal of flexibility and contributes significantly to our past performance. We also prefer to concentrate our investments on our best ideas.
This is in comparison to the “Mutual Fund/ Noah’s Ark” approach that many financial investors take of buying two of everything, and having to invest in very specific sectors/industries. Historically, the vast majority of mutual funds who invest this way, have charged high fees and lagged behind the major indexes over the long-term.
