Marcelo Zinn

President and Founder · CRD 3168985 · Miami, Florida

Marcelo Zinn founded Maredin in 2005 as a family office and converted it to a registered investment adviser in 2014. He is the firm's president and its investment decision-maker. He lives and works in south Miami-Dade, which is also where most of the firm's clients live.

Background

Before Maredin, Marcelo was head portfolio manager at Juresa Ltda in Brazil. He has been managing individual portfolios and funds for more than twenty years. He graduated from the University of Miami, has lectured there, and contributes to investing publications including the Manual of Ideas and Seeking Alpha. He lives in Miami with his wife and three children.

Maredin started in 2005 as a family office. The mandate was narrow and the client list was shorter: manage capital for a small group of families using value investing principles, and do it without the product shelf that comes attached to most financial advice.

What changed the business was not a strategy insight. It was a pattern in the conversations. People with substantial assets kept describing the same experience — advice that was generic, attention that was thin, and a plan that looked identical to the one their neighbor had been shown. The size of the account did not seem to change it.

Maredin registered as an investment adviser with the Florida Office of Financial Regulation in 2014 in order to offer the same work to a wider group. It has stayed independent since. No broker-dealer parent. No bank. No fund company. Nothing on a shelf that has to be sold.

How he invests

The foundation is value investing in the tradition of Benjamin Graham and Charlie Munger. Understand the business. Understand what it is worth. Act on the gap between those two things, or do not act.

That framework has a known weakness. It is largely silent on the environment the business operates in — rates, liquidity, policy, the level of forced buying and selling happening around a security for reasons that have nothing to do with the security. Maredin added a macro-aware overlay closer in spirit to Stanley Druckenmiller: position size and exposure respond to conditions, while the underlying selection stays valuation-driven.

The firm builds its own research and planning tools rather than renting them. That is a resourcing decision as much as a philosophical one. A firm this size cannot staff a research department, so it builds one.

None of this is a promise about results. Method is not outcome, and any description of an approach that implies otherwise should be read carefully — including this one.

Who he works with

Three groups, mostly.

Maredin advises a limited number of relationships. That is a constraint on the business, and it is the reason the work can be built around one household instead of assembled from a template.

Community and professional involvement

These are not credentials. They are the reason he knows the CPAs, the estate attorneys and the business brokers in this part of the county by name, which matters more to a client in the middle of a transaction than any of it looks like it should.

Published commentary

He writes the firm's commentary and practice notes. Everything is published openly and carries his name.
